Álvaro Pombo García de los Ríos (born June 23, 1939 in Santander , Cantabria ) is a Spanish poet, novelist, politician and political activist.

Life

Pombo received his doctorate at the University Complutense in Madrid and then went on Birkbeck College of the University of London a degree in BFA . He lived in London from 1966 to 1977 and only returned to his home country after the end of the Franco regime and settled in Madrid.

In 1973 Pombo published his first volume of poetry Protocolos , which was followed in 1977 by his second volume of poetry Variaciones , which was awarded the Premio El Bardo . Relatos sobre la falta de sustancia , a volume of short stories published in 1977, contained a number of short stories about homosexual people, a topic that is also used in other of his works - such as B. in Los delitos insignificantes from 1986 (German 1991 as minor offenses ) - plays a role. His novel El héroe de las mansardas de Mansard received the Premio Herralde in 1983 and other of his works were also awarded prizes, most recently El temblor del héroe with the Premio Nadal in 2012 .

Pombo made his homosexuality public, but is an opponent of same-sex marriages, a point of view he voiced, for example, on breakfast television on Spanish public television in November 2011.

Political work

Pombo is an active member of the Unión Progreso y Democracia (UPyD), a party that was represented by members of the Spanish Parliament , the European Parliament and the Parliament of the Basque Country .
