Frank Doran (born April 13, 1949 in Edinburgh - † October 30, 2017 ) was a Scottish politician of the Labor Party . He was a Member of the House of Commons .

Family, education and professional career

Born the fourth child of a painter, Doran was a second wife to the MP Joan Mary Ruddock . He has two children from his first marriage in 1967. He received his education at the Ainslie Park Secondary School in the Edinburgh district of East Pilton and at the Leith Academy in the Leith district . He left school at 16 and worked for the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board . There he worked in the legal department , where his interest in law was aroused. He took in the night school , first his degree after and then studied at the University of Dundee . There he was awarded the Bachelor of Laws in 1975 . Two years later he was admitted as a solicitor and practiced in Dundee until 1988. He mainly dealt with cases related to mental health and children's rights issues. During this time he was warned by the Law Society of Scotland for improper behavior .

Political career

Doran's first election campaign was in 1984 when he ran unsuccessfully for the European Parliament in the constituency of North East Scotland . In the British general election in 1987 , he won the seat in the constituency of Aberdeen South . He prevailed against the incumbent and candidate of the Conservative Party , Gerry Malone . Under Neil Kinnock , Doran rose to be the Labor Party's energy policy spokesman. In the British general election in 1992 he lost his seat as the only incumbent member of the Labor Party. After his election he worked as a lobbyist for various unions . In the British general election in 1997 , he went to the newly created constituency of Aberdeen Central and was elected with 49.8%. That same year, Doran became a parliamentary private secretary of Ian McCartney in the Department of Trade and Industry appointed.

In 1999 he moved to the Cabinet Office with McCartney . After Doran was re-elected by a large majority in the 2001 elections , he was a member of the Committee on Culture, Media and Sport. Before the general election in 2005 , there was a postponement of the constituencies, so that his constituency Aberdeen Central fell away. Thereupon there was an internal party vote for the candidacy in the constituency of Aberdeen North . Doran prevailed against incumbent Malcolm Savidge . In the following general election, he clearly prevailed against his competitors with 42.5%. In the legislative period until 2010, Doran served on several committees, including the Administrative Committee, which he also chaired, and the Finance Committee. After being re-elected in 2010 , he moved to the Art Committee as chairman. Doran did not run for the general election in 2015 . His party colleague Richard Baker ran in the constituency for the Labor Party. However, he could not prevail against the SNP candidate Kirsty Blackman .
