history

Lawyers in Scotland were organized into professional associations as early as the 16th century. For example, the Faculty of Advocates was founded in 1532, although it can be assumed that its roots go back even further, the Society of Writers to Her Majesty's Signet dates back to 1594 and the Royal Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow has its origins before 1668. In the course of the 20th century, both the number of solicitors and the legal regulations affecting them increased considerably. It was therefore necessary to create a uniform representation of interests for all professionals. This went hand in hand with the requirement to uniformly regulate the system of pro bono work , which has not yet been regulated by law. The Legal Aid and Solicitors (Scotland) Act 1949 therefore provided for the establishment of the Law Society of Scotland and for the first time made legal aid a statutory part.

The governing body of the Law Society is the Council . Its members are elected by the general assembly. The Council is supported in its work by the Board of Directors . Together, these two organs determine the general direction of the association.

The president of the association and his representative are elected for one year. The treasurer is responsible for the association's finances. Another body is the senior president . The Chief Executive Officer is responsible for day-to-day business. He also directs the approximately 120 employees of the association. In addition to the statutory organs, the members of the assembly also contribute on a voluntary basis. They come together in working groups at regular intervals. A reform of the association has been in progress since 2012, including creating new working groups and reducing the size of the council.
