Political career

Malone began his political career in the British general election in February 1974 . He ran in the constituency of Glasgow Provan , but reached only third place behind the candidates of the Labor Party and the Scottish National Party with 16.8%. In the 1979 elections, Malone was again defeated in the constituency of Roxburgh, Selkirk and Peebles , this time against the Liberal Party candidate David Steel . Four years later, he first stood in by-elections in the Glasgow Hillhead constituency , but was defeated by the candidate of the Social Democratic Party , Roy Jenkins . For the general election that took place in the same year, his party nominated him to succeed Iain Sproat as a candidate for the constituency of Aberdeen South . Here he managed to win the election with 15,393 votes or 38.9%. At the end of the legislative period in which he held the post of Whip from 1986 to 1987 , Malone lost his seat to Frank Doran . For the British general election in 1992 , however, he returned to politics and ran in the Winchester constituency, which is considered safe for the Conservative Party . He won the seat by a margin of 12.3% over the Liberal Democrats candidate . In the following legislative term, Malone held the office of Minister of State from 1994 under Secretary of Health Virginia Bottomley . In the 1997 elections , Malone involuntarily received high media exposure. On May 1, 1997 he was surprisingly defeated by a difference of only two votes against the candidate of the Liberal Democrats, Mark Oaten . Against this he initiated an electoral review procedure before the High Court of Justice . The court came to the conclusion on October 6, 1997 that 55 valid ballot papers had been incorrectly ignored, with 22 falling to Malone and 18 to Oaten, so that Malone should actually have won the election by two votes. The judges therefore ordered a by-election. This took place on November 20, 1997. Malone was clearly defeated with a difference of 21,556 votes.
