Mark Oaten

Mark Oaten (born March 8, 1964 in Watford , Hertfordshire ) is a British politician and member of the Liberal Democrats in the House of Commons .

Life

Oaten attended Queens' School in Bushey. After finishing school, Oaten studied at Hatfield Polytechnic , University of Hertfordshire . After completing his studies, he worked as a consultant and lobbyist for various Westminster companies.

Political career

Oaten began to get involved in politics alongside his job. He became chairman of the Social Democratic Party on Watford City Council. In 1988 the Liberal Democrats party emerged from the union of the Liberal Party and Social Democratic Party. In the British general election in 1992, he failed to become a member of the Liberal Democrats. It was not until the British general election in 1997 that Oaten won the seat for Winchester in the lower house, defeating Conservative MP Gerry Malone . Oaten defended his seat in the 2001 and 2005 general election . In January 2006 he resigned from his candidacy for the presidency of the Liberal Democrats. On January 21, 2006, the British newspaper News of the World published an article according to which Oaten had an affair with a 23-year-old prostitute in the summer of 2004 and February 2005.

Oaten is married and has two daughters.
