The Dundee Contemporary Arts (abbreviated DCA ) is a museum of contemporary art in the Scottish Dundee . The DCA was opened in 1999 and, in addition to rooms for temporary exhibitions, also houses two cinemas and the University of Dundee's Visual Research Center . The DCA is considered one of the most successful new museum buildings of the 1990s in Great Britain .

history

The idea of an art exhibition center combining current positions in art with creative offerings for the residents of Dundee, and offering a first non-university exhibition space for graduates of the local Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (now a faculty of the University of Dundee ) , has been discussed in Dundee since the mid-1980s.

In the mid-1990s, Dundee City Council , the University of Dundee, and the newly formed Dundee Contemporary Arts partnered to bring the plans to fruition. In 1995 the City Council acquired a plot of land with a dilapidated garage and brick warehouse near the university and the Dundee Repertory Theater. The intended construction site was very narrow and had a height difference of 8 m.

The British architect Richard Murphy won an architectural competition for the new DCA in 1996. The condition of the competition was the preservation of the brick warehouse, whereby space was to be created for a large and a small gallery for temporary exhibitions, two cinemas with a total of 300 seats, a graphics workshop, a café, an information center and the University's Visual Research Center. In addition to the administration rooms for the DCA itself and living quarters for guest artists, the building complex was also to house the administration of the Department of Art and Monument Preservation of Dundee City Council. The shell with a usable area of 5,000 m² was built from July 1996 to March 1998 and officially opened in March 1999. The construction cost £ 6.1 million, of which £ 5.4 million was financed by the National Lottery Fund approved by the Scottish Arts Council .
