Life

Smith's parents are from South Africa. He dedicated the song "Durban Skies" to them. It tells the story of how his parents met, fell in love, and got married.

Smith writes and arranges all Bastille songs except remixes and covers and worked with friend Mark Crew on the production of the album Bad Blood . He plays many instruments including the piano , keyboard , percussion , and melodica .

On June 14, 2019, Smith released the third studio album called Doom Days together with the other members of Bastille .

Solo career

Dan Smith began composing songs on the piano at the age of fifteen.

Examples of productions from his solo career are "Alchemy", "Words Are Words", and "Irreverence". Smith achieved little success, but continued to write songs, both alone and with friend Ralph Pelleymounter of the band To Kill A King . The two founded a side project called "Annie Oakley Hanging", which Pelleymounter described as "cowboy like".

After graduating, Smith went back to London, where he continued his solo career. A leaflet drew his attention to Chris "Woody" Wood, who was on the lookout for drum students. Smith visited Wood in hopes of starting a band with one of his students, but Wood was so impressed with Smith's songs that he agreed to become the drummer for Smith's band himself.

As a singer, Smith worked on the song "La Lune", which was written and produced by the French electronic musician Madeon and is on his album "Adventure" (2015).

In 2017, Smith played a role in Charli XCX's music video "Boys" .

Influences

Dan Smith is a fan of the TV series Twin Peaks and is directed by David Lynch . The series inspired one of his first recorded songs, "Laura Palmer" and Bastille's first Virgin Records single, "Overjoyed". His earlier work was heavily influenced by artists such as Regina Spektor .
