Josep Maria Mangado i Artigas

Josep Maria Mangado i Artigas (born February 24, 1953 in Barcelona ) is a Catalan classical guitarist and musicologist. He is counted at the Catalan Guitar School . As a musicologist, Mangado researches "The Guitar in Catalonia". In 1998 he published the work “La guitarra en Cataluña”.

life and work

Mangado began his guitar studies in Sant Feliu de Llobregat at the Llobet -Students Josep Carnicé (1900-1987). In 1972 he continued his studies with Jordi Codina at the Municipal Conservatory of Music in Barcelona . Mangado has been Professor of Guitar at the Conservatori Municipal de Música de Manresa since 1992 .

From 1983 to 1998 Mangado was a member of the Quartet de Guitarres de Barcelona . With this quartet he went on concert tours all over Europe (Vienna, Berlin, Lisbon, Paris, Derry). He also worked with the soprano Victoria de los Angeles on international concert appearances . He also worked with other instrumental formations. He is currently concentrating his work on the guitar duo Codina-Mangado formed with Jordi Codina . He was invited by the Gran Teatre del Liceu to perform the guitar parts of the operas Don Pasquale by Gaetano Donizetti , Otello by Giuseppe Verdi and the Zarzuela Doña Francisquita by Amadeu Vives . In the latter appearance he worked with Alfredo Kraus . With the Coral Sant Jordi he performed the oratorio Canto General by Mikis Theodorakis on texts by Pablo Neruda under the direction of Oriol Martorell . With the Orquestra Ciutat de Barcelona he conducted the Seventh Symphony by Gustav Mahler in 1991 under the direction of Franz-Paul Decker ; similarly, he took part in the performance of the opera Moses und Aron by Arnold Schönberg in 2000 . In both performances he took over the guitar part. Together with Jordi Codina, he performed the entire guitar work of Fernando Sor in Barcelona from 1988 , the work of Josep Ferrer in 1994 and the work of Leo Brouwer in Barcelona in 1999 .

Mangado has premiered the following works: The Llibre del Contrapunt for three guitars by Manuel Valls , the Quatro Ostinatti for two guitars by Jaume Torrent and the Cosmogonía for two guitars by Carles Guinovart .

Mangado has recorded several sound carriers, one of them with the Quartet de Guitarres de Barcelona for the Discmedi label, and another with Jordi Codina with a monographic program on Fernando Sor. There are also several recordings for European radio and television broadcasters.

In 1989 he was a member of the jury of the Fernando Sor International Guitar Competition in Rome, in 2005 at the Miquel Llobet International Guitar Competition in Barcelona and in 2008 at the Camogli International Guitar Competition in Italy.

Since 2006 Mangado has been President of the Cercle Guitarristic a Catalunya (Guitarists Association of Catalonia). In addition to his teaching and concert activities, Mangado conducts intensive research on the subject of "The guitar in Catalonia". He published a book on the subject in 1998. He also worked on biographical contributions to Fernando Sor (published in the work: Luis Gásser (editor). Estudios sobre Fernando Sor. Madrid 2003).
