The slim blue arrow ( Orthetrum sabina ) is a dragonfly species of the genus Orthetrum from the family of the sail dragonflies . The German name refers to the particularly slender abdomen of the species .
features
Imago
The slim blue arrow reaches a body length of 43 to 50 mm. The abdomen of both sexes is colored black and white. The species sometimes has a greenish color on the breast. The abdominal appendages are white and contrast with the adjacent black abdominal segments.
larva
The larvae are 17 to 19 mm long and have dorsal spines on abdominal segments S4 to S7. The slim blue arrow is the only representative of its genus in Europe to have a spine on the S7.
Distribution and habitat
The slim blue arrow is widespread from southern Europe ( Greece and Cyprus ) and North Africa ( Tunisia ) through Asia and Southeast Asia ( Vietnam , Thailand , East Timor ) to Japan . It is also found in Australia and Micronesia .
The habitat of the slim blue arrow ranges from ponds to rice fields to rivers with low currents.
