Dru Drury's father was a silversmith , from whom Dru took over the business in 1748. In 1789 he stopped working as a silversmith and devoted his life to entomology. Even before that, Drury was interested in entomology and was President of the Society of Entomologists of London between 1780 and 1782 . He died in 1804 at the age of almost 79 years and was in St. Martin-in-the-Fields buried.

Between 1770 and 1787 he published the three-volume work Illustrations of Natural History, wherein are exhibited upwards of 240 figures of Exotic Insects , which was later revised and republished in 1837 under the title Illustrations of Exotic Entomology .

Drury was also an avid collector. Its collection includes over 11,000 species .

In 1770 Drury illustrated the butterfly Battus polydamas antiquus from the island of Antigua, which is now considered extinct.
