from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Friedrich Molter also Friedrich Valentin Molter (born July 1, 1722 in Karlsruhe ; † February 6, 1808 there ) was a German librarian , poet , translator , numismatist , classical archaeologist and councilor , man of letters, director of the court library and privy councilor in Karlsruhe.

Life

Friedrich Valentin Molter was one of eight children of the composer Johann Melchior Molter (1696–1765) and his first wife Maria Salome (1691–1737), who was married in 1718 in Hagsfeld near Karlsruhe, daughter of the barber Johann Nicolaus Rollwagen in Gernsbach.

From 1769 Molter was initially "co-director", from 1772 then sole and at the same time the first full-time director of the Karlsruhe court library. During his term of office, the collection of the court library was transferred from Baden-Baden to Karlsruhe in 1772 and the secularized monastic book ownership was taken over from a total of 30 libraries in 1803. He published for the first time on the library's manuscripts. He was mainly active as a writer, especially as a translator from Italian and French.

The grammar Toscanische Sprachlehre , based on Italian models and published in Leipzig in 1750, was Molter's first major publication.

Through Friedrich Valentin Molter, the music manuscripts of his father came into the possession of the former court library and today's Badische Landesbibliothek (BLB).

His son Friedrich Molter worked at the court library in Karlsruhe from 1801 and was appointed court librarian there in 1817.
