Life

Förster, son of the pastor and church poet Karl Christoph Förster and younger brother of the historian and poet Friedrich Christoph Förster , devoted himself to theological and philosophical studies as well as painting, to which he was finally drawn, in particular through Peter von Cornelius ' personal influence. During his studies he became a member of the original fraternity in Jena in 1818 , of the old Prague fraternity in Teutonia in 1818/1819 , of the old Berlin fraternity Arminia and the Marburg fraternity in 1820 . After studying Tizian and Holbein in Dresden in 1822 , he entered the school of Cornelius in Munich in 1823, made his first attempts at fresco painting in the Glyptothek , and worked under his direction from January 1824 to autumn 1825 on Hermann's large fresco of theology in the Bonn auditorium and later took part in the decoration of the court garden arcades and in the execution of the pictures in the Königsbau in Munich.

Förster published a large number of books and articles on Peter von Cornelius . An overview can be found under.

Working as an art historian

Ernst Förster , Portrait of Jean Paul (1826)

An order from Crown Prince Maximilian of Bavaria to make drawings based on older masters in Italy led him to research on art history, which he published as contributions to modern art history , for which the University of Tübingen awarded him a doctorate. Following the biography of his father-in-law Jean Paul , which he continued after the death of the first editor, he wrote other works on Paul's life and work.

After the death of the editor Ludwig von Schorn , he and Franz Kugler took part in the editing of the “ Kunstblatt ” in Berlin from 1842 and completed the translation of Vasari's life of the most distinguished painters, sculptors and builders that Schorn had begun .

He wrote a variety of art historical works, biographies, speeches and travelogues. These were published in several editions and even, such as B. the handbook for travelers in Italy into French, also translated into other languages. For the publications he drew and colored z. T. pictures personally.
