Adolf Chybiński

Adolf Chybiński (born April 29, 1880 in Kraków , † October 31, 1952 in Poznań ) was a Polish musicologist, historian, ethnologist and educator.

Chybiński had piano lessons in Kraków with Jan Ostrowski , Antoni Szybalski and Alfons Szczerbiński . From 1891 to 1898 he was a student of Jan Drozdowski . He then studied law at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków and, between 1899 and 1904, classical philology with Kazimierz Morawski (1852–1925) and Leon Sternbach (1864–1940) and German studies with Wilhelm Creizenach . 1901-02 he attended the musicological seminar of Adolf Sandberger in Munich.

From 1904 he continued his musicological training with Sandberger and Theodor Kroyer in Munich. He also attended lectures in art history with Berthold Riehl (1858–1911) and Karl Voll (1867–1917), in German literary history with Karl Borinski (1861–1922) and Franz Muncker (1855–1926), and in philosophy with Theodor Lipps . Between 1905 and 1907 he took private composition lessons from Ludwig Thuille .

His work as a musicologist began during his time in Munich. In 1908 he wrote his dissertation Contribution to the History of Beat Clocking , and in 1912 he completed his habilitation with the text Teoria menzuralna w polskiej literaturze muzycznej pierwszej połowy XVI wieku at the University of Lviv . He taught musicology here and received the title of professor in 1917. 1928–29 he was dean, 1929–31 vice dean of the Philosophical Faculty.

In 1914 he carried out ethnomusic research in Podhale and in the following years published articles on Polish folk music and in 1924 at the Polish Academy of Sciences the writing Instrumenty muzyczne ludu polskiego na Podhalu . In 1926 he was one of the founding members of the Friends of Early Music Association in Warsaw and from 1928 was editor-in-chief of its Wydawnictwo Dawnej Muzyki Polskiej series of publications . He also worked as co-editor of Kwartalnik Muzyczny and Muzyka Polska and editor of the first two volumes of Polski Rocznik Muzykologiczny . During the German occupation he gave private music lessons and worked as a translator for a social security company.

In 1945 Chybiński received a professorship at the University of Poznań and headed the musicology faculty until 1952. 1948-49 he was again editor of the Kwartalnik Muzyczny . In 1949 the first volume of his monograph on Mieczysław Karłowicz was published . In 1950 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Poznań, and in 1952 he became an honorary member of the Polish Academy of Sciences .
