Alfons Szczerbiński

Alfons Szczerbiński (born April 2, 1858 in Gostyń , † March 25, 1895 in Śrem ) was a Polish composer and music teacher.

Szczerbiński had his first music lessons in Srem with an organist named Kraszkiewicz and began composing as a child. From 1877 to 1880 he studied at the of Joseph Joachim led Royal Academic College for performers Musical Arts in Berlin. Until 1883 he studied composition with Eduard Grell and Woldemar Bargiel .

After his return to Poland he worked as a music teacher in Count Plater's house in Niekłanie near Radom until 1893. During this time sonatas, chamber music works and songs were created. From 1893 he lived as a music teacher in Krakow.

The composer himself destroyed some of his works, other compositions were lost in the First and Second World Wars, and 13 of the 65 preserved works were published. In 1931 Radio Poznań broadcast a program in his memory, in which his niece Maria Szczerbińska played some of his piano works.
