Stanko Premrl

Stanko Premrl (born September 28, 1880 in Podnanos , † March 14, 1965 in Ljubljana ) was a Slovenian composer.

He attended the humanistic grammar school and the theological seminary in Ljubljana and was ordained a priest in 1903. He then studied organ playing with Rudolf Dietrich and composition with Robert Fuchs at the Vienna Conservatory.

From 1909 to 1939 he was choirmaster and organist at the cathedral and from 1909 to 1945 he was organ teacher at the conservatory, the music academy, the organ school, the theological faculty of the university and the Ljubljana seminary. He gained a reputation as an extraordinary concert organist and organ improviser. For thirty-five years he edited the magazine Cerkveni glasbenik (The Church Musician), in which he published numerous articles, essays, letters and reviews.

In addition to a Christmas suite, a sinfonietta, a cantata, chamber music works and piano pieces, he mainly composed church music: Masses, Requiem, Passions, Magnificat, Te Deum and Offertories as well as more than 2000 songs, including Zdravljica after France Prešeren , which has been the National anthem of Slovenia is.
