The Moscow Nikulin Circus on Tsvetnoi Boulevard ( Russian Московский цирк Никулина на Цветном бульваре ) is one of the two stationary circuses in Moscow , along with the Great Moscow State Circus . It was founded in 1880, making it one of the oldest of its kind in Russia.

The circus is located in the northern center of Moscow, near the boulevard ring and the Tsvetnoi Bulwar and Trubnaja metro stations .

history

The circus was originally built as the Salamonsky Circus ( Цирк Саламонского ) in 1880. At that time it was named after the initiator of its construction, the acrobat, dressage rider and trainer Albert Salamonski (1839–1913), internationally known at the time, who ran a circus in Berlin from 1873–1879 . The first performance in the newly founded Moscow Circus took place on October 20, 1880. At that time, the circus building was still quite modest; the less affluent spectators had to be content with standing room at the gallery. Nevertheless, many events became popular with the public. In addition to Salamonski himself, who gave various performances with horses, clowns often performed in the circus on Zwetnoi Boulevard , as well as tamers from the internationally known family of circus artists, the Durovs, including Anatoli and Vladimir Durov .

After the October Revolution , the circus was converted into the first state circus in the Soviet Union . From then on and until the end of the Soviet state, it was one of the most renowned theaters in the country. The artists who worked there and performed regularly include the clowns Karandasch , Oleg Popow and Juri Nikulin . The latter was also director of the circus that bears his name from 1982 until his death in 1997.
