Ferruccio Zambonini (born December 17, 1880 in Rome , † January 11, 1932 in Naples ) was an Italian mineralogist .

Life

Ferruccio Zambonini received his doctorate in natural sciences in 1903. From 1904 to 1905 he was assistant at the chair for theoretical chemistry at the R. Scoule d´Ingegneria di Torino and from 1906 to 1909 assistant for mineralogy at the R. Università di Napoli. In 1909 he received the chair of mineralogy at the R. Università di Sassari and in 1911 the same at the R. Università di Palermo. Two years later he became a full professor at the R. Scoule d´Ingegneria di Torino. In 1922 he became Professor of General Chemistry and Rector at the University of Naples and remained so until his death.

He was particularly active in the study of the mineralogy of Vesuvius . The law of crystallography he described , later known as Zambonini's rule , states that the formation of mixed crystals is influenced by the rays of the ions rather than by their chemical properties.

He died on January 11, 1932 after a heart attack and was buried in Montelabbate .

Zambonini is considered the first to describe u. a. the minerals  avogadrite , bassanite and muthmannite .

Honors

The minerals ferruccite and zamboninite were named after him.
