The idea for a gaucho version of Faust came to del Campo at the suggestion of Eduardo Gutiérrez after attending a performance of the opera Faust by Charles Gounod at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. In this version, a gaucho tells another about his visit to the opera and explains the plot to him in the local dialect ( Rioplatense ).
