John Goss

Sir John Goss (born December 27, 1800 in Fareham , † May 10, 1880 in London ) was an English organist and composer .

Life

Goss studied with Thomas Attwood and in 1838 he succeeded him as organist at St Paul's Cathedral . Goss's own students include Arthur Sullivan and Frederic Hymen Cowen .

As a composer he has an effect through his contributions to Anglican church music . Songs like O Savior of the World and Praise, my Soul, the King of Heaven are still sung in English churches, even at celebrations of the royal family, and impress German listeners with their anthemic solemnity.

On 19 March 1872 he was a Knight Bachelor for beaten knight .
