Eugen Adam (born January 22, 1817 in Munich ; † June 6, 1880 ibid) was a German history , genre and battle painter .

Life

Eugen Adam, the third son of the painter Albrecht Adam . Like his brothers, he was taught painting by his father. In his youth he lithographed many of his father's paintings. Later, as a battle painter , he dealt with particularly warlike episodes and genre scenes , for which he had collected studies during the Italian campaign in 1848 and 1849. He stayed in Italy until 1856 and then painted pictures in Munich from war, folk and hunting life, most recently from the Franco-German War .

Together with his brother Franz , he published souvenir sheets of the Italian campaign drawn on stone, which were printed by his brother Julius , who was a lithographer .

In the spring of 1880 he painted his last painting, A Shepherd Praying Before a Crucifix. He died in Munich on June 6, 1880. The collection of over 200 sheets of hand drawings from the Franco-German War was acquired from his estate by the Bavarian state for the royal cabinet of copper engravings.
