Alfred Merz

Alfred Merz (born January 24, 1880 in Perchtoldsdorf near Vienna , † August 16, 1925 in Buenos Aires ) was an Austrian - German oceanographer .

Life

Alfred Merz studied history and geography at the University of Vienna from 1901 to 1906 . After completing his studies, he was appointed to the Institute for Oceanography in Berlin ( German Reich ) in 1910 , where he began with the physical exploration of the seas. In 1911 he undertook research trips to the South Atlantic and the Mediterranean . He then devoted himself to the preparation of the German Atlantic Expedition , which was carried out from 1925 to 1927. Despite his poor health, Merz was the leader of the expedition on the surveying and research vessel Meteor until his death . The expedition was led to the end by Georg Wüst and Fritz Spieß . He is buried in his birthplace Perchtoldsdorf.

Appreciation

The Merz Peninsula on the east coast of Palmerland is named in his honor. In 1917 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
