Anton Arnold (born January 31, 1880 in Weißkirchen , Kingdom of Hungary , Austria-Hungary , † July 13, 1954 in Vienna ) was an Austrian opera singer ( tenor ) of Danube Swabian origin.

Life

Arnold was the son of a watchmaker. He received his training from Paul Greiff and Laura Hilgermann . His debut took place in 1909 at the city theater in Olomouc , where he returned in the 1913-14 season. Further stations in his career were Regensburg (1910–11 and 1915–16), Teplitz-Schönau (1911–12 and 1914–15), and Dortmund (1912–13). After an engagement at the kk priv. Carltheater Wien , he finally belonged to the Vienna Court Opera from 1916 (later Vienna State Opera ) until he retired early in 1942 for political reasons, but continued to appear as a guest (also in Holland and Spain). While he had sung youthful or heroic roles early on, he later concentrated on the character subject, where he played in a variety of roles, including a. as a mime in the Nibelungenring and as David in the Meistersinger became very popular with the audience. In 1919 Arnold created the figure of the hunchback in the world premiere of the opera " Die Frau ohne Schatten " by Richard Strauss . His repertoire included Don Curzio in Figaro's Wedding , Yamadori in Madama Butterfly , Alcindor in La Bohème , Spoletta in Tosca , Narraboth in Salomé and the Missail in Boris Godunow . In total, he has appeared on stage in around 200 different roles, including over 2500 performances at the State Opera.

Arnold also performed in his hometown of Weißkirchen . He donated the fees of his concert tours in the USA after the First World War (16 million crowns ) to the aid organization of the Vienna Swabian Association for children in need. After the war ended, Arnold owned and directed the German-language theater in Temesvar for a short time .

In 1938 he appeared at the Salzburg Festival as Balthasar Zorn in the 1938 performance of Meistersinger von Nürnberg under Wilhelm Furtwängler . In 1941 he was a guest at the Volksoper , where he had already performed as a choir singer in 1909. Since the 1920s he was often heard on Austrian radio. Until 1948 he gave concerts with an unchanged beautiful voice.

Anton Arnold had three children, including the physician and pianist Gottfried Eduard Arnold .
