Paul Devaux

Paul Louis Isidor Devaux (born April 10, 1801 in Bruges , † January 30, 1880 in Brussels ) was a Belgian politician and writer. He was particularly committed to the independence of Belgium from the Netherlands , which was ultimately achieved in the Belgian Revolution .

Life

At first Paul Devaux was a lawyer in Liège and then in 1824 he formed a close relationship with Lebau and Rogier , from which the so-called doctrinal party emerged in 1830. In the jointly run opposition magazine Politique (Liège), Devaux brought the Catholics into harmony with the liberals and significantly shaped the independence movement in the Belgian public. During the revolution that broke out in September 1830, Devaux represented Bruges in the National Congress , fought republican tendencies there and worked with Nothomb to draft a new constitution in line with a constitutional monarchy .

In March 1831, in the second ministry of the regent Erasme Louis Surlet de Chokier , Devaux became minister of state with no special duties, played a key role in the appointment of Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg as King of the Belgians, and in June 1831, as commissioner at the London conference , played a key role in the removal the difficulties encountered in accepting the crown on the part of the prince. After his installation as King of the Belgians, he withdrew from state affairs and remained only a member of parliament.

In 1839, when it was a question of the definitive acceptance of the 23 articles, Devaux declared itself in the national interest for their acceptance. When the Lebeau-Rogier government took office in 1840, he founded the liberal Revue nationale . In 1846 he became a member of the Belgian Academy. In 1863 he was defeated by the Catholic opponents in the elections in Bruges and then withdrew completely from the political arena. He only remained a member of the Bruges Municipal Council until he went blind in 1875, and died in early 1880 at the age of 78.
