Hans Heinrich Ryffel (born November 12, 1804 in Stäfa ; † September 4, 1880 in Wetzikon ) was a Swiss entrepreneur and politician.

Life

Hans Heinrich Ryffel was born as the son of Hans Rudolf Ryffel, homeworker and farmer, and his wife Regula nee. Köller born. At the age of eight he began to work in a factory in Stäfa in 1812, later he was still active in Alsace and Basel , until he was hired as a supervisor in his father-in-law's spinning mill.

Together with Johann Kaspar Pfenninger , Johannes Braendlin, Jakob Dändliker, Johannes Hegetschweiler , Unterervogt Rudolf Rebmann and Heinrich Braendlin as well as other founding members, he founded the reading society in Stäfa in 1819 , which still exists today.

In 1828 he was a co-founder of the non-profit society of the Hinwil district and of the savings fund in 1829 under their care, in whose administration and management he was until 1878. In 1829 Hans Heinrich Ryffel took over the management of the spinning mill from his father-in-law Hans Felix Huber at Zürcherstrasse 47 in Wetzikon.

The spinning mill became his property in 1830. The company developed so well (in 1839 the factory had 2,402 spindles) that he bought his brother Conrad a small factory. In 1840 he acquired the Hanhart and Höhn spinning mill at Zürcherstrasse 51–57. In the same year on March 11th, his brother Conrad's company burned down. Hans Heinrich Ryffel then had a larger building built with a saw on the brook on the same site. In 1840 he sold his spinning mill at Zürcherstrasse 47 to Johannes Dürsteler, who set up a silk twisting and dyeing mill there and called it “Schönthal”. In 1855 Hans Heinrich Ryffel bought the mill in Glattfelden and built a mechanical spinning mill there, which employed up to 200 people.

In 1832 he was co-initiator of a secondary school in Wetzikon- Seegräben , which he also supported financially, as well as various choral societies, for example by presiding over the singing festivals in Wetzikon in 1850, 1861 and 1872 and taking over the deficits. He was also involved in the church and financially supported the purchase of a new bell, a church tower clock and the construction of two new cemeteries.

From 1836 he was president of the guild court of the Wetzikon-Hinwil district. From 1839 to 1872 he was president of the secondary school administration. From 1842 to 1879 he was a member of the Cantonal Council (known as the Grand Council until 1869), and during this time he was three times President. In 1856 he campaigned for the continuation of the Glatthalbahn from Uster through the Aatal to Wetzikon. The municipal council of Wetzikon was only persuaded to participate financially in the railway construction when Hans Heinrich Ryffel threatened to relocate his company to Glattfelden. On November 9, 1857, the first train arrived in Wetzikon.

In 1828 he married Johanna Magdalena Huber (* June 30, 1805; † September 11, 1879), the daughter of his employer, the spinning mill owner Hans Felix Huber from Wetzikon. They had two children together:

  • Juliana Friederika (born November 9, 1830), married to the later National Councilor Hermann Stadtmann ;
  • Heinrich Albert (born March 4, 1833), married to Wilhelmina Schiess von Herisau .
