Jean Alexandru Steriadi

Jean Alexandru Steriadi (born October 29, 1880 in Bucharest ; † November 23, 1956 there ) was a Romanian painter and graphic artist .

Life

Steriadi studied from 1897 to 1901 at the Școala de Arte Frumoase in Bucharest, then until 1903 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich , where he was a student of Wilhelm von Diez , Gabriel von Hackl , Heinrich Wolff and Ernst Neumann . From 1903 to 1906 he stayed in Paris , where he took courses from Jean-Paul Laurens at the Académie Julian and took lessons from Lucien Simon .

In 1906 he had his first solo exhibition in the Ateneul Român in Bucharest. He became president of the Tinerimea Artistică society and professor of painting, design and graphics at the Școala de Arte Frumoase. Stereadi became known as a painter of portraits by contemporary poets and painters such as Alexandru Macedonski , Alexandru Vlahuță and Ștefan Luchian as well as a lithographer and caricaturist . One of his last works was a self-portrait, which he completed in 1956.

An important student of Steriadis was Ion Bitzan .
