Philibert Jacques Melotte

Philibert Jacques Melotte (born January 29, 1880 - March 30, 1961 ) was a British astronomer whose parents immigrated from Belgium .

In 1908 he discovered a new moon on the planet Jupiter , now known as Pasiphae . The celestial body was not given this name until 1975, however, before it was referred to as "Jupiter's moon VIII", as it was the eighth discovered moon on the planet.

On January 16, 1909, he discovered the asteroid (676) Melitta . In 1915 he put together a catalog of 245 open star clusters and globular clusters , which in particular contains many large clusters that are visible to the naked eye such as the Hyades , the hair of Berenike and the α-Persei group .
