Prince Abhakorn Kiartiwongse (around 1900)

Prince Abhakorn or Abhakara Kiartiwongse , Prince of Chumphon ( Thai พระเจ้า บรม วงศ์ เธอ พระองค์เจ้า อาภากร เกียรติ วงศ์ กรม หลวง ชุมพร เขต อุดม ศักดิ์ , RTGS transcription Phra Ong Chao Aphakon Kiattiwong Krommaluang Chumphon Khet-Udomsak spoken [ pʰráʔ ʔong ʨâw ʔaːpʰaːkɔːn kìattìwoŋ t͡ɕʰumpʰɔːn kʰèːtʔùʔdomsàk ] ; *  December 19, 1880 Bangkok ; †  May 19, 1923 ibid), was a member of the Siamese royal family, medic and admiral . He is considered the "father" of the Thai Navy .

Prince Abhakorn was the 28th child of King Chulalongkorn (r. 1868-1910). His mother, Chao Chom Manda Mot (of the Bunnag family ), was the father's concubine. Accordingly, he got the title of Phra Ong Chao and not the highest-ranking prince title Chao Fa . As is customary in Thailand due to the complicated pronunciation of the frequently changing official names of the members of the ruling family, he was known among the people mainly by his short title Prince of Chumphon and various other short names, such as เสด็จ เตี่ย (Sadet Tia = royal father) or หมอ พร (Mo Phon = Doctor Phon).

In his youth, Prince Abhakorn studied naval affairs in England and returned to Siam to serve in the Royal Navy, making important contributions to the modernization and improvement of this branch of service. He is revered today as the father of the Thai Navy.

Prince Abhakorn studied both navy and medicine, with a particular interest in the use of medicinal plants . As a doctorate he worked for all strata and classes of the hierarchically structured population of the country.

Prince Abhakorn died in Bangkok on May 19, 1923.

The prince of Chumphon was the founder of the house of Abhakorn. After the abdication of King Rama VII ( Prajadhipok ), his son Prince Aditya Dibabha was a member of the Regency Council for the underage King Ananda Mahidol . The Navy's Abhakorn Hospital in Sattahip is named after Prince Abhakorn .
