Sarah Knauss
Sarah DeRemer Knauss (born September 24, 1880 in Hollywood , Pennsylvania , † December 30, 1999 in Allentown , Pennsylvania) was an American age record holder.
From April 16, 1998 until her death at the age of 119 years and 97 days, she was officially recognized as the oldest living person by the Gerontology Research Group and the Guinness Book of Records . Behind the French Jeanne Calment (122 years and 164 days) she takes second place in the list of the oldest people . She has been the oldest living person in the United States since the death of Wilhelmina Kott on September 6, 1994, and has been holding since April 4, 1996, when her age exceeded that of Margaret Skeete, who died on May 7, 1994 at 115 years and 192 days , the record of the highest age in the United States.
Life
Knauss was born in 1880 as Sarah DeRemer Clark in Hollywood, a small town in Pennsylvania that was briefly shaped by coal mining , the only daughter and the oldest of three children of Walter (1849-1934) and Emilia Clark (1857-1926). In 1901 she married the tanner and later sales manager of The Morning Call newspaper , Abraham Lincoln Knauss (1878-1965). Her husband also held a leading role in the Republican Party in her home state's Lehigh County . Before her marriage, she worked as an insurance broker, afterwards, and especially after the birth of her daughter Kathryn in 1903, she worked as a housewife . After the death of her husband, she lived alone until she moved in with her daughter at the age of 104. At age 106 she became dependent on a wheelchair and at 119 she was nearly deaf . She spent the last nine years of her life in a nursing home in Allentown, where she died two days before the " millennium ". She left behind her daughter, who died in 2005 at the age of 101, as well as several grandchildren, great, great, and great, great-grandchildren.
