Albert Soergel

Wilhelm Albert Soergel (born June 15, 1880 in Chemnitz , † September 27, 1958 in Karl-Marx-Stadt ) was a German literary historian .

Life

Albert Soergel was a student at the Royal High School in Chemnitz, where he passed his school leaving examination in 1899. After completing a year in the military, he studied German , history and philosophy in Freiburg , Berlin and Leipzig . He received his doctorate in 1905 from the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Leipzig and passed the state examination one year later .

In the winter of 1906 Albert Soergel taught as a trainee lawyer at the Königin-Carola-Gymnasium in Leipzig and from April to September 1907 at the Realgymnasium in Annaberg . Afterwards he resigned from the school service in order to dedicate himself to the publication of the book Dicht und Dichter der Zeit on behalf of the Voigtländer Verlag , which had numerous editions and established his reputation as a literary historian. On October 1, 1911, he resumed his work as a teacher at the Royal Trade Academy in Chemnitz for the subjects of German, German history and history of literature.

At the beginning of the First World War he was drafted as a reserve officer and remained at the front until the end of the war. For his service in 1916 he received the Knight's Cross Second Class of the Saxon Order of Albrecht with Swords and the Iron Cross First Class.

Albert Soergel taught in Chemnitz from 1911 to 1945, as a professor from 1920 .

Soergel was co-founder and scientific director of the “Society of Book Friends in Chemnitz” and established its high reputation in Germany. From 1921 to 1945 he worked on proposals for lectures, readings and publications and supervised the printing of the publications.

After the " seizure of power " by the National Socialists , he joined the NSDAP in 1933 . He also belonged to the Nazi teachers' association and worked as a cell chairman and for the SA . In 1935 he published the volume Dichter aus deutschem Volkstum as part of his literary history .

In 1945 Soergel was dismissed as a professor because of his National Socialist activities. After that he was still active as an editor.
