Dschanlawyn Narantsatsralt ( Mongolian Жанлавын Наранцацралт ; born June 10, 1957 in Ulaanbaatar , † November 12, 2007 in the Töw-Aimag province ) was a Mongolian politician . He was Prime Minister of Mongolia from December 9, 1998 to July 22, 1999.

Life

Early years

Narantsatsralt was born in Ulan Bator in 1957. He was married with two children and was fluent in Russian and English. He studied at the State University of Belarus and the Moscow University of Cadastre and Land Management, which he graduated in 1981. He then studied at the Mongolian State University, where he obtained a doctorate in geographic sciences in 1990. He later also attended a research institute in India and completed courses in urban planning and economic management in Japan and South Korea .

After his return from Moscow he worked as an engineer and specialist at the Institute for Land Management. From 1989 to 1991 he was a research assistant and section head at the Institute for Soil Policy of the Ministry for the Environment. Then he served until 1996 as an expert department head in the office for urban development and planning of the city administration of Ulan Bator.

Political career

In 1996 Narantsatsralt was elected mayor of Ulaanbaatar. Successful work in this office helped him to be appointed Prime Minister of Mongolia in December 1998. Because of a controversial letter to the First Deputy Prime Minister of Russia about the Mongolian-Russian copper-molybdenum ore enrichment plant, he had to resign eight months later.

From 1999 to 2000 Narantsatsralt was a lecturer and visiting professor at the Mongolian National University, at the Faculty of Geography and Soil Management. In the 2000 elections he won a seat in parliament, the Great State of Chural . Since 2006 he has been chairman of the Parliament's Standing Committee. Most recently he was Minister for Building and Urban Planning. He died in a traffic accident.
