Hermann Berens
Johann Hermann Berens (born April 7, 1826 in Hamburg , † May 9, 1880 in Stockholm ) was a German pianist and composer .
Life
Berens received his first lessons from his father Conrad (1801-1857), the local military music director who was a well-known flutist and composer. He was also the father of the violinist Adolph Berens and the music publisher Ernst Berens. Hermann Berens later studied composition with Carl Gottlieb Reissiger in Dresden for two years .
After going on a concert tour through Germany with the singer Marietta Alboni in 1845 , he lived in Hamburg exclusively for composing. In 1847 he went to Stockholm, where he earned a respected position by founding Quartet soireen .
In 1849 Berens was appointed music director in Örebro , in 1860 Kapellmeister at the Mindretheater in Stockholm and later orchestral conductor of the royal theater as well as professor of composition and a full member of the academy there. He died in Stockholm on May 9, 1880.
Berens has achieved notable achievements in all genres of the composition, but especially in the dramatic field, as his operas ( Violetta ) and his three operettas ( The Midsummer Night's Dream , Lully and Quinault and Riccardo ), which were acclaimed in Stockholm, prove. He also wrote incidental music for Kodros .
His educational piano music should also be emphasized. An unusual work is his Piano School Care of the Left Hand, Op. 89, with over 70 etudes . To this day, it has helped numerous piano students achieve approximate two-handed skills . He also left numerous sonorous solo songs and some organ works.
