An evening party (also French soirée or soiree ) originally refers to an evening gathering of people (mostly of higher social standing) who meet to drink, make music, play theater, card and board games, read aloud and talk.

The term was coined especially in the 19th century , when the evening parties found their way from the royal and ruling houses to civil society. Evening parties took place in private salons.

Some traditional clubs, mostly those that were founded in the middle of the 19th century, still bear the name evening party today .

Today the term is often used when one wants to emphasize the socially or culturally higher level of an evening gathering. An event in the morning is called a matinee .
