Léon Girardet
Léon Girardet (born April 10, 1856 in Versailles , † December 3, 1895 in Neuilly-sur-Seine ) was a French painter and engraver.
Léon Girardet came from a Swiss Huguenot family of engravers. His father, Paul Girardet, worked as a copper engraver. His brothers Jules , Eugène , Paul Armand and Théodore and his sister Julia Antonine also worked as engravers and painters.
Léon Girardet studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris with Alexandre Cabanel .
In the winter of 1878/79 he accompanied his parents on a trip to Algeria. He hoped the warm climate would improve his ailing health. He visited Algeria again in 1880 with his brothers Eugène and Jules.
Above all, he created anecdotal genre scenes from the so-called "middle-class milieu", which mostly take place in a relaxed atmosphere. The people in splendid robes made of precious fabrics that shimmer in the sunlight are often depicted in stimulating conversation. As a copper engraver he was only active in reproducing from his father's templates.
