Gößweinstein Castle , also called Gößweinstein Castle , is a medieval hilltop castle in Gößweinstein in the Forchheim district in Bavaria . The complex, located high above the market and the Wiesent , may have served as a model for Richard Wagner for the Grail Castle in his Parsifal . The castle is listed as a Bavarian monument with D-4-74-129-10 .
History of the castle
The castle was probably named after its builder, Count Gozwin . He was killed in 1065 after invading the territory of the Bishop of Würzburg. A first documented mention of the castle "Goswinesteyn" is known from the year 1076. At that time, Emperor Heinrich IV had Bishop Burchard II von Halberstadt , who was involved in the Saxon War , imprisoned there, which suggests that there were already strong fortifications.
Since Bishop Otto von Bamberg it has been provable as a Bamberg property . From 1348 to 1780 the castle was the seat of a bailiwick office of the bishops of Bamberg .
In 1525 there was destruction during the Peasants' War and subsequent reconstruction. During the Second Margrave War in 1553, the castle was destroyed again and then rebuilt.
The castle came into Bavarian state ownership through the secularization of the Bamberg Monastery in 1803 . The Bavarian state sold the castle in 1875 to Pauline Rabeneck , widow of the estate of Aspach near Uffenheim. In 1890 Baron Edgar von Sohlern acquired the castle and redesigned it in the neo-Gothic style. Late Gothic figures have been preserved in the castle chapel .
