Wiesenthau Castle stands on the northeastern edge of the municipality of the same name at the foot of the Ehrenbürg . The renaissance building is a three-wing complex with four corner towers from the middle of the 16th century and the remains of a surrounding wall.

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1062 in connection with the royal court in Forchheim . The Lords of Wiesenthau have been documented as Bamberg Ministerials since 1128 . It is not clear whether a castle already existed at that time . The castle itself was first mentioned in documents in 1379.

Originally owned by the Lords of Wiesenthau , part of the castle was sold to the Bamberg Monastery on June 25, 1379 . In the following time the castle came completely under Bamberg suzerainty. The Lords of Wiesenthau remained in possession of the castle as Bamberg feudal people.

In 1430 the castle was badly damaged by the Hussites . Another destruction took place in the Peasants' War in 1525. The castle underwent a fundamental renovation in 1566. Apart from a short period of time, the complex or at least part of it was always owned by this family until the Lords of Wiesenthau died out in 1814.

After extensive renovation between 1985 and 1992, the facility is used as an inn and hotel.
