The Regensberg castle ruins are the ruins of a hilltop castle in the Regensberg district of the Kunreuth community in the Forchheim district, Upper Franconia district in Bavaria .

history

The time of construction and the builder of the first facility are unknown. According to the type and structure of the outer and main castle , it was likely to have originated in the late 12th century.

The castle was first mentioned in documents in 1251. In that year, the Bamberg bishop Heinrich I von Bilversheim gave half of the castle as a fief to Herdegen von Gründlach . In 1315, half of the castle came to Gottfried von Hohenlohe-Brauneck as a Bamberg fief , who was married to the heir to the last Herdegen. In 1356 the castle was bought by the von Seckendorff family . In 1376 the castle chapel was mentioned in a document. Half of the castle was also bought in 1405 as a Bamberg fiefdom to the Lords of Stiebar , who in the course of time also received the other half of the castle. In 1492 the castle was conquered in a feud with the Bishop of Bamberg and occupied at short notice. During the Peasants' War it was destroyed by rebellious peasants in 1525. In 1571 Wolf Dietrich von Wiesenthau was enfeoffed with the rebuilt castle. In 1615 it came back to the Bamberg Monastery due to indebtedness and became the seat of Bamberg bailiffs. It was badly damaged in the Thirty Years War in 1632 and 1639. In 1732 the Weißenohe monastery bought the rule with the castle, which had already been described as ruinous. In 1744 the remaining parts burned down. At least partially restored, the complex fell into disrepair over time. It had been privately owned since 1805, and the remaining buildings were demolished in 1867. Only remnants of the retaining walls and the cellar vault remain from the medieval complex. The castle chapel, which is used as a parish church, has been preserved.
