Cortese is a grape variety that is mainly grown in the Italian region of Piedmont , but also in Lombardy and Veneto (here under the name "Bianca Fernanda"). In 1798 it was mentioned under the name “Curteisa” as the most important grape variety in the province of Alessandria . In the 1990s, a total of 2,951 hectares of vineyards were planted with Cortese in Italy .

Famous wines are made from it, such as the DOCG Gavi and the DOC wines Bianco di Custoza , Colli Tortonesi , Cortese dell'Alto Monferrato , Garda , Monferrato , Oltrepò Pavese and Piemonte .

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is densely hairy, greenish-yellow in color and reddish-edged. The green-yellowish young leaves are coated like a cobweb.
  • The medium-sized leaves are five-lobed (sometimes seven-lobed) and strongly indented. The stalk bay is closed like a lyre. The blade is bluntly serrated. The teeth are medium-sized compared to the grape varieties.
  • The cone-shaped grape is medium to large in size, shouldered and loose berries. The slightly elliptical berries are medium-sized and yellow-gold in color. The berries are juicy with a simple taste.

Maturity: early. Cortese ripens almost 15 days after the Gutedel . It is therefore considered to ripen early.

properties

The medium-late shoot protects it from the risk of late frost. The vigorous variety produces consistently high yields. Cortese is very productive; if the yield is not limited by cutting back the grapes, the wines become watery and flat. Cortese is susceptible to raw rot .
