Grignolino is a red wine that is mainly grown in Italy in Piedmont . The grape , made from a single variety, produces a light, refreshing red wine (or rosé ) that is best drinkable young and cool. The cultivation of the grape variety is recommended in the provinces of Cuneo , Alessandria and Asti . Smaller plantings are also known in California (→ viticulture in California with the designations of origin Napa Valley AVA and Santa Clara Valley AVA ).
DOC appellations are Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese DOC and Grignolino d'Asti DOC. These wines consist of at least 90% Grignolino, Freisa may be mitvinified up to 10% . Small amounts of Grignolino can also be added to Gabiano , Malvasia di Casorzo d'Asti and Rubino di Cantavenna wines .
