Myogenin is a transcription factor in vertebrates that is involved in activating muscle-specific genes . In particular, myogenin occurs during regeneration phases in skeletal muscles and plays a role in the formation of skeletal muscle fibers during certain stages of embryonic development .

The name Myf-4 is also used in connection with the human genome . If high concentrations of myogenin are present, it mainly binds as a homodimer to its characteristic binding sequences in the promoter of the regulated genes. In low concentrations it forms heterodimers together with other transcription factors, which in turn bind to the DNA . Possible cooperating transcription factors are MEF-2, NF-1, E12 and COMP1.
