Life

Mario Perniola studied with Luigi Pareyson and was thus influenced by the famous Turin School, which also produced other important contemporary thinkers such as Umberto Eco and Gianni Vattimo . His early work dealt with metal literature - which also established his contact with, for example, Eugenio Montale . Between 1966 and 1969 he was in close contact with the Situationist International (founded by Guy Debord ). From 1976 to 1983 he taught at the University of Salerno , after which he held a professorship at the University of “Tor Vergata” in Rome. He was visiting professor at many universities and research centers in France, Denmark, Brazil, Canada, Japan and the USA. Perniola has authored several influential books - the best known is Der Sex-Appeal des Inorganischen (in German 1999). Many of his writings have been translated into numerous languages. It was the editor of several magazines: Agaragar (1971 to 1973), Clinamen (1988 to 1992), Estetica News (1988 to 1995) and Ágalma. Rivista di studi culturali e di estetica (since 2000).

theory

His philosophical work deals primarily with four groups of questions: the body and its perceptions; Rituals beyond assigning meaning; différance as a tradition of thought beyond dialectics; and art as a historical category. The first group is closely related to contemporary approaches dealing with reification ( Marxism ), sexual fetishism and the feelings emanating from things; the second is linked to the latest anthropological and historical research on ritual, particularly in ancient Rome and Catholicism; the third belongs to a tradition of thought that extends from Friedrich Nietzsche , Georges Bataille and Martin Heidegger to Jacques Derrida and deconstructivism ; and the fourth is devoted to the historical and social conditions for the production and appreciation of artistic and aesthetic experience and combines traditional philosophical positions with contemporary traditions of thought, such as those established by British cultural and media studies .
