The synagogue in Asti , a city in the northern Italian region of Piedmont , was built in 1889. The baroque synagogue is located in Via Ottolenghi 8, in the center of the former Jewish ghetto . Today it is only used on high public holidays.

description

In today's synagogue, which arose from a synagogue of the 17th century as a result of the renovation under Carlo Benzi, there are still pieces of equipment from the 16th and 17th centuries that come from an older synagogue that had been demolished. The rich Jewish families Artom (see Isacco Artom ) and Ottolenghi in Asti financially supported the representative expansion of the synagogue. By buying and demolishing neighboring houses, it was possible to enlarge the building and create a free space around the synagogue that was fenced off by a fence.

The entrance can be reached via a five-step flight of stairs . The portal is flanked by four columns of Ionic order . There is a Hebrew inscription on the entablature . From the vestibule you come to the left to the small prayer room, also known as the winter synagogue, which is now used as a museum room. On the right side of the anteroom is the staircase to the women's gallery , which is supported by two columns. Opposite the women's gallery, on the east wall, is the splendid Torah shrine , which is framed by columns and crowned by the tablets of the law . Four columns divide the room into three naves. In front of the Torah shrine is the simple Bima with a simple lectern. The Torah shrine was probably created by Giuseppe Maria Bonzanigo in 1809. In 1816 it was gilded. On its eight fields there are representations of the Jewish liturgy .

museum

The side rooms of the building are now used as a Jewish museum.
