Theresa Magdalena Grillo Michel, Italian: Teresa Grillo Michel PSDP (born September 25, 1855 in Marengo (Alessandria) as Maria Antonia Grillo; † January 25, 1944 in Alessandria ) is an Italian blessed and founder of the order .

Live and act

Theresa Grillo was born as the last of five children to the hospital director Giuseppe Grillo and Maria Antonietta Parvopassau and was baptized the day after their birth. First she attended school in Turin . Her father died in 1867 and she began studying at the College of English Misses in Lodi , which she completed in 1873.

In 1877 she married infantry lieutenant Giovanni Michel. They moved to Campania , Sicily and Naples . Her husband died of heat stroke in a parade in Naples in 1891 . She then returned to Spinetta Marengo.

She fell into depression and, on the advice of her confessor, read the life story of Giuseppe Benedetto Cottolengo . She decided to devote her life to the poor and needy and on January 14, 1893, she joined the Third Order of the Franciscans . She sold her palace and moved into a small house. She donated her wedding dress to a Capuchin church.

In 1899, at the suggestion of Joseph Capecci , Bishop of Alessandria , she founded the Congregation of the Little Sisters of Divine Providence . Together with eight companions, she took the vows, took the name of the order Theresa Magdalena and was the first superior of the order, which founded a branch in Brazil in 1900 . She made eight trips to Brazil in her life.

Theresa was beatified on May 24, 1998 by Pope John Paul II in Turin .

Her liturgical feast day is January 25th. The Order and the Diocese of Alessandria will commemorate her on January 23rd.
