Pietro Abbà Cornaglia

Pietro Abbà Cornaglia (born March 20, 1851 in Alessandria , Piedmont ; † May 2, 1894 in Alessandria) was an Italian composer , pianist , organist , choir director , music teacher and music historian .

Life

Pietro Abbà Cornaglia's father was Maurizio Abbà. His mother Angela Molinari was a hat maker. After Maurizio's death, Angelina married the teacher Pietro Cornaglia. This is where the double surname comes from. Cornaglia awakened the boy's interest in music, received his first music lessons from Cornaglia and played the organ at the age of six. At the age of eight he played in solemn church services and concerts. He attended the Milan Conservatory from 1868 to 1871 and studied piano with Antonio Angeleri , organ with Francesco Almasio , composition with Lauro Rossi and Alberto Mazzucato, and literature with Emilio Praga . His thesis, the cantata Caino ed Abele [ Cain and Abel ], received a first prize and a medal of honor. In 1870 his piano composition, the elegant Valzer Il Reno, was awarded a prize at the exhibition of fine arts in Alessandria.

He soon gained a good reputation. In 1875 he gave a well-known benefit concert in Turin for the Comitato dei Veterani delle patrie battaglie 1848-1849 [Committee of the Veterans of the Struggle for Freedom 1848-1849]. During this time he wrote some church and chamber music works valued by his contemporaries. He won a composition competition of the Accademia Santa Cecilia in Rome on the 27th anniversary of Carlo Alberto  I's death with a Messa di Requiem . This work was premiered on July 28, 1876, the day of his death, with a large orchestra in Turin Cathedral . His first opera, Isabella di Spinola, followed in Milan in 1877 . It premiered on May 20th under the direction of Arrigo Boito and repeated ten evenings. Various Italian musical journals published some of his compositions during this time.

As a concert pianist he went on concert tours. to Germany and Spain. Finally he returned to Alessandria. From 1880 until his death he was music director and organist at the cathedral in Alessandria. He founded a school for composition, counterpoint, singing and piano and conducted concerts of the Associazione filarmonica alessandrina [Philharmonic Association Alessandria]. In 1884 the opera Maria di Warden was premiered in Venice .

On August 28, 1888, he married his former student, the piano teacher Elisa Costa from Vercelli . The world premiere of the opera Una partita a scacchi followed in Pavia in 1892 . In the music newspaper Gazzeta musicale di Milano from Milan he wrote music reviews about musical activities in Alessandria. So on June 4, 1893 for the performance of Giuseppe Verdi's opera Otello . In 1894 he died in Alessandria of badly treated appendicitis .

The singer Vincenzo Benedetto, mezzo-soprano alto with a range from a small g to a three-stroke c without falsetto, was a vocal student of Abba Cornaglia.

Awards

In addition to the prizes for his two compositions Caino e Abele and Messa da Requiem , he also won other prizes at exhibitions and competitions. He received the Order of the Crown of Italy [ Croce di 'cavaliere della Corona d' Italia. ], Knight class.
