history

Skeleton of Marengo in the National Army Museum

Marengo was a small Arabian gray stallion whose height was only 1.45 m. Marengo was named after the battle of Marengo , where Napoleon rode him. He probably came from the El Naseri stud and was imported from Arabia at the age of six a year after the Battle of Aboukir .

Marengo is described as fast, skillful, brave and bulletproof. He was wounded eight times in battle. He carried Napoleon in the battles of Austerlitz , Jena , Wagram and Waterloo and survived the Russian campaign . According to reports, Marengo was able to gallop the 129 km route from Valladolid to Burgos in five hours.

Marengo was captured near Waterloo and brought to England by Lord Petre. General Angerstein bought Marengo. Attempts to use Marengo as a stallion at Ely at the New Barnes stud farm were not very successful.

Marengo died at the age of 38. General Angerstein had a hoof transformed into a snuffbox. The skeleton is now on display at the National Army Museum in London .
