Vizir ( 1793 - 1826 ; also Le Vizir , German: the Wesir ) was one of Napoleon Bonaparte's war horses .

history

Vizir was a small Arab with a height of only 1.35 m. The light gray stallion was a gift from the Ottoman Sultan Selim III in 1802 . to Napoleon, who rode the horse from 1805, including in the battle of Jena and Auerstedt in 1806 and the battle of Prussian Eylau in 1807. In 1814 Napoleon took Vizir with him into exile in Elba . The Battle of Waterloo in 1815 remained Vizir spared because he was at that time already retired.

Vizir, who wears the brand of the imperial court stables - a crowned "N" - on his left hindquarters, died in France in 1826 at the age of 33, five years after Napoleon's death. It was stuffed and sold to England in 1836, where it was transported without its filling. From 1843 Vizir could then be seen - again stuffed - in Manchester . Napoleon III , Napoleon Bonaparte's nephew, brought Vizir back to France in 1868.

After France's defeat in the Franco-Prussian War , Vizir disappeared in the camps of the Louvre . From March 7, 1904, Vizir was exhibited in the Musée de l'Armée in Paris . In 2016 the exhibit was completely restored, financed by crowdfunding , and has been on display in the museum's new showcase since June 2016.
