The General Hospital Barmbek was opened in 1913. It consisted of over 60 individual buildings in pavilion construction and had over 2000 beds. history

Former thermal power station of the AK Barmbek

The Barmbek General Hospital was built in its original form from 1910 to 1915 as a pavilion- style park hospital based on plans by Friedrich Ruppel . Many of the buildings had an architecture typical of the time. The site housed more than 60 buildings and more than 2000 beds.

The hospital was able to take care of itself at the time. There is a water tower and its own thermal power station on the site , but these are no longer used for the new building. The water tower is out of order and is to be used again after it has been sold to a private investor. The thermal power station is operated by Vattenfall to supply the district with district heating. Overall, there was a large infrastructure, which u. a. also included its own pathology , its own laundry and a large kitchen . There were also employees from all areas, such as gardeners and craftsmen, the supply came from a single source, where today numerous external companies are commissioned. The entire complex was designed as a large park , which was also popular with many walkers. With its size of over 15 hectares and the infrastructure, the hospital was a “city of its own”. After the sale of 13.8 hectares by the City of Hamburg in 2006, 475 new apartments as well as areas for restaurants, retail and offices were built on the site in so-called “Quartier 21”. Both existing, listed buildings were converted and new buildings were created.

At the end of 2011, the first tenants moved into renovated ward blocks on the site. A health center has opened in the ancient pathology.
