Magdalene von Sachsen (born March 7, 1507 in Dresden , † January 25, 1534 in Berlin ) was a Princess of Saxony and, by marriage, Elector Princess of Brandenburg .

Life

Magdalene was a daughter of Duke Georg von Sachsen (1471-1539), from his marriage to Barbara (1478-1534), daughter of King Casimir IV of Poland . Magdalene was raised in the Catholic faith by her parents .

She married the future Elector Joachim II of Brandenburg (1505–1571) in Dresden on November 6, 1524 . Almost 3,000 guests on horseback are said to have appeared at the lavish celebration, including 24 ruling princes. At the express request of the bride's father, the wedding was carried out by the Archbishop of Mainz .

In the ten years of their marriage, Magdalene had seven children. She died at the age of 26 shortly after the birth of her youngest child; the shock of a nearby fire is said to have hastened death. The events of the death of his daughter, which was shortly followed by the death of his wife, hit Magdalenes father so badly that he no longer shaved out of grief and was nicknamed " the bearded one ".

A year later Magdalenas was widowed as Joachim II. Elector of Brandenburg and in the same year married Hedwig of Poland for the second time .
