The painting Kurprinzessin Magdalena von Brandenburg is a portrait attributed to the school of Lucas Cranach the Elder and shows the Kurprinzessin Magdalene von Brandenburg . It is a panel painting on linden wood from around 1530 to 1540. The painting is in the painting collection of the Grunewald hunting lodge in Berlin.

description

On the 51.3 cm × 37.9 cm painting, Kurprinzessin Magdalena von Brandenburg is shown in half-figure format from the right side. She wears a dark red velvet dress with a stand-up collar, the effect of which is enhanced by a dark green curtain as a background. The parallel tiered sleeves of the dress are loosened up by decorative slits. Her hair is pinned up under a pearl bonnet. On her head she wears a red-orange hat with ostrich feathers . The hat and bonnet identify her as a married woman. As a piece of jewelry, she has put on several link chains around her neck and wears several rings on her fingers. The rich clothing pushes into the foreground while her pale, formulaic-looking face and lifeless hands recede behind it. The flat representation of the face and hands is probably related to the poor state of preservation of the image.

It is believed that the painting is a copy of a Cranach painting created and lost around 1530. It differs significantly from a Cranach portrait of the princess, dated 1529, kept in Chicago , with a fuller figure and softer facial features.

Ownership

The picture can be traced back to 1790 in the picture gallery of the Berlin Palace as a portrait of a lady by Albrecht Dürer . Today it is owned by the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg .
