Pawłowice (German: Pawlowitz ) is a place and seat of a rural community in southern Poland . He belongs to the Powiat Pszczyński of the Silesian Voivodeship .

geography

Pawlowitz is located 15 kilometers from the district town of Pszczyna (Pless) and about 35 kilometers south of Katowice in the Upper Silesian hill country between 235 and 285 m above sea level. M. Pawłowice is a coal town (coal mine in Pniówek) and with more than 10,000 inhabitants one of the most populous villages in Poland. Neighboring municipalities are Jastrzębie-Zdrój , Pszczyna , Strumień , Suszec , Zebrzydowice and Żory .

history

The place was founded in the 13th century, the first documented mention of a village "Pawlowicz" dates back to 1281. The patronymic name is derived from the personal name Paweł (Paul) with the typical Slavic suffix - (ow) ice. In 1293 the place becomes a parish of the diocese of Wroclaw , whose Gothic stone church dates from 1586. The area around Pless was partially inhabited by the German population from the German East Settlement until the 15th century. Most of them were Polonized by the 16th century.

In 1910 the rural population of the surrounding villages of Pless was mostly Polish-speaking, or used the Upper Silesian dialect ( water Polish ). This was also shown in the referendum in Upper Silesia on the future membership of Upper Silesia in 1921, in which 74% of the residents of the district voted for Poland, while in Pawłowice 437 or 70% of the valid votes (622) were cast for Poland.

The place belonged to the Principality of Pless or Prussia until 1922 . After the Polish annexation of East Upper Silesia in 1922 and since 1945, Pawlowitz has belonged to Poland. Between 1975 and 1998 the place was administratively part of the Katowice Voivodeship .
