Franz Seraph Rieder

Franz Seraph Rieder (also Franz Rieder ; born March 9, 1806 in Poysdorf ; † April 3, 1873 in Linz ) was an Austrian Roman Catholic clergyman , theologian and canon lawyer .

Life

Rieder was the son of a wealthy farmer . He attended high school in Nikolsburg and then went to study at the University of Vienna . On November 11, 1828, he was ordained a priest and then went to pastoral care. He held positions in Oberhollabrunn , Döbling as well as in Vienna at the St. Johannkirche on Praterstrasse and most recently at the Kirche am Hof . During this time, he was promoted to Dr. theol. at Vienna University doctorate and received there on December 5, 1833 as a member of the Faculty of Theology. In addition to his work as a clergyman, the faculty elected him to their dean on December 6, 1838 .

Rieder came to Linz on March 16, 1841 as a canon . He became director of the seminary on May 1 of the same year and, on September 21, also director of theological studies at the Linz Lyceum . In the following period Rieder traveled to the German states and studied the educational institutions there. On April 12, 1845 he was appointed supervisor of the schools in the Diocese of Linz . In 1848 he became a member of the Upper Austrian Landtag . There he was elected Vice President and also a member and speaker of the Committee for Elementary Schools. On February 28, 1849, he received the office of Cathedral Scholaster in Linz.

Rieder represented the sick bishop Gregor Thomas Ziegler at the conference of bishops in Vienna in 1849 . In 1850 he was given further powers of representation and appointed vicar general of the diocese. After Ziegler's death, he led the diocese as a chapter vicar . On January 12, 1855, he became provost of the cathedral in Linz and, in 1857, president of the Linz marriage court. On October 8, 1859, he was also appointed a member of the Advisory Commission on the drafting of the rural community regulations for the Archduchy of Austria ob der Enns and on other related matters .

With his inheritance, Rieder set up the Dompropst Rieder's Poor Foundation and the Dompropst Rieder's support fund for priests in need . The seminary received its extensive library.
